The Freedom and Innovation Revitalizing U.S. Entrepreneurship (FAIR USE) Act of 2007, H.R. 1201, was introduced on February 27. The FAIR USE Act is co-sponsored by Congressman Rick Boucher (D-VA), Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Congressman John Doolittle (R-CA). Libraries urge other Members of Congress to co-sponsor this important bill that would amend the copyright law.

  1. I have a feeling this is directly inspired from the latest thread on SEM. I joined recently. Honestly, I don’t see what all the paranoïa is about. Just use your commun sens when using copyrighted material. And no false ethics through procedural red tape. Please! (I’m referring to a particular message on the SEM list).

    Don’t you think?

  2. Actually, no, this wasn’t motivated by the SEM discussion at all. I tend to navigate toward circles in which Open Access, Creative Commons, Copyright, patents, trademarks, and free access to information are discussed. In this case, it came from Sivacracy.
As for the SEM issue, I do know what the paranoia is all about and I’m very careful in my own courses. No amount of common sense is sufficient to defend yourself in a court of law. The red tape is ridiculous but until we get true copyright reform, it’s good advice to exercise extreme caution.

  3. You’re probably right, but I haven’t been faced with this issue yet so I can’t judge really. I’ll get back to you when I do have something copyrighted to teach ;p
